Rhymes With Love

I wanted to write a love song for my special lady, in honor of us dating for 2 years. Coming up with the melody and chords? Not too hard for this one. Coming up with non-cheesy lyrics? Much more difficult.

I decided to go the “slightly cheesy, but intended for cleverness” route. Back in Episode 57 of Composer Quest, songwriter Brian Laidlaw and I talked about how love songs are destined to fail, because almost nothing rhymes with love. Well, that sounded like a good challenge to me!

Rhymes With Love

Lyrics:
I’ve got a million things to do
But I’m just gonna sit here ’til I finish this for you
Until I find the words I’ll play these chords on endless loop

‘Cause I want to sing
What you mean to me

But I’ve got too much on my mind
To write a song encompassing these two years of our lives
The mountain that this song should be just leaves me paralyzed

‘Cause I want to sing
What you mean to me

But every cliché that I write
Bounces off the walls like hollow echoes in the night
A pale reflection destined to sound trite

So if I seem too mimetic
I’m just trying to be poetic because

You are the one I love
You’re the girl I’ve been dreaming of
Count on the stars above
You will always be my dove

Though we travel sea to sea
I’d be happy anywhere where you and I could be
The world just seems more colorful when you share it with me

And I want to sing
What you mean to me
I want to sing
What you mean to me
I just want to sing I love you
I just want to sing I love you
I love you
